On March 9, 2016, Sanderson Centre Manager Glenn Brown announced that the world’s first Performing Arts theatre application of a new technology to improve accessibility for patrons with vision loss has been implemented at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts. Representatives from the City, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and W. Ross Macdonald School were on hand during the announcement as details and a demonstration of the new technology were shared. Donated through fundraising by the Sanderson Centre Foundation, this Bluetooth beacon system helps people to get around by describing location of stairs, washrooms, and other features of the building, and is the first of its kind in the world for a theatre.
